SO WHO IS THIS GUY?

My photo
Hi there! As you can see, my name is Chris, I'm at university and I'm currently 21 years old, but there's more to know than my name and age. So what am I doing then? Well I'm studying Game Art at DMU. I am aiming to be one of the top proffesional vehicle artists in the industry. In the meantime, check out this Blog of mine and when your finished, take a look at my website!

Concepts

Here are 3 quick concepts i put together, mainly discussing general layouts and ideas for lighting as this will play a key part in the final presentation and the Cubemap on the vehicle.

Update

Almost there, list of elements to texture: Steering wheel, Gearbox/rear crash structure, rear suspension, TV cameras and brake discs/vents.

Update

Specular map is in, tyre normals etc and an improved car paint

Update

Tyre normals are in, along with wheel nuts and steering wheel. Still in budget, really struggling to keep it under budget but almost all the elements are modeled so im still on track. Specular map is still missing on the car body.

Cubemap still looks a little crap on this, il begin working on the scene tomorrow, il upload some concepts to show the ideas.

Update

Added the cube map to the tyre walls, very subtle, but you'd be surprised how glossy a new set is. Carbon fibre will be added tomorrow along with adding the monkey seat to the beam wing.

Update

Coming along nicely, majority is unwrapped now, just need to add the carbon fibre, then really work on the shaders when everything is in the scene.

Xoliul Shader

Starting to have serious issues with xoliul, whenever i update my texture sheets and go into Max, it crashes on me! Heres a quick update of the model, busy texturing the tyres.

No specular map yet.

Update

Update

Having a lot of fun texturing this! Main areas of detail is obviously the cockpit area and the graphics on the rear wing due to the ingame cameras. The car paint material will be much better once its in the final scene and has its own HDRI as the one im using at the moment is of the Codies vehicle project.

Tyre textures need a lot more work as they only have the main features.

Update

Tyres walls have normals, re modelled some areas of the exhaust, had to cut out the shape of it as it just wasnt going to work with a texture.

Texture

Began texturing the wheels, and car body! Using xoliul shader for now, then il later export it all into a game engine. HDRI and reflections are a bit crazy at the moment.

Update

Back under 19k, i can still shed some polygons tho, only need a few extra to finish the brake ducts and thats about it! All is on schedule at the moment.

Body Panels

So the body panels are now in, was very expensive to do, i can save a few polygons here and there, so its back under 19k, only things really left now is to finish the brake ducts, and check over the entire model for any mistakes, topology fixes and smoothing groups.

Update

Spending a fair bit of time tweaking the rear structure of the car. Getting the gearbox lined up with the body work, while also having the suspension aligned properly is taking a bit of time!

More screenshots

This time with some lighting!

Update

Just a screenshot of the model so far. 17k triangles at the moment, so everything is on track still. 1k is budgeted solely for the steering wheel out of the 20k

Update

Rear suspension is modelled, diffuser is almost completed, just missing the gear box to mount it all together!

Il then turn attention to the floor of the car and the underside, which will be quite basic in shape.

Update

So ive welded the floor, splitter and diffuser together. Looking good. Going to chamfer the edge loop connecting the floor and sidepods, its a nice curve between the two on the actual car.

Update

Added some more detail, check out the sidepod air intake and roll hoop intake. I never realised there was an  extra air intake under the roll hoop untill today when i was looking over my reference images, cant believe ive never spotted it before.

Update

Update

Going to complete the splitter, diffuser and rear wing today, after this is done, il only have to complete the rear suspension, and then begin checking and smoothing out any issues. Then cut in the body panels!

Then il do a few more checks and add some updates onto the car which were seen in the F1 Jerez tests last week. Then i need to sort out the damaged front wing states and unwrap the car. The steering wheel and cockpit will be seperate models, the steering wheel will have its own texture and the cockpit will use a tileable carbon fibre texture

Coanda exhaust!

So the exhausts are now modeled in, looking good so far. Was actually quite tricky to get right. Ive also started to smooth out the engine cover, aswell as the driver area.

Game Cameras

Here are some quick camera set ups that mirror the in game cameras, going to look awesome!
